We met at 10 am in the parking lot at Farview Nature Park on 6257 138th Avenue, north of Guardian Brewing, and hiked about 2.5 miles on flat terrain.
Afterward, we celebrated Earth Day with a picnic, There were NO PLASTIC containers, bottles, cups, wrapping, or utensils. We brought lunch in a canvas bags and old-fashioned wooden picnic baskets. People used tin cups, stainless steel forks, and cloth napkins. Sandwiches were wrapped in bags made of compostable plant-based material. We shared pretzel rods from a glass jar, and brought beverages in stainless steel water bottles.
Food choices also have an impact on the environment: locally-produced food does not have to be transported, food that requires fewer processing steps consumes less energy, and so on.
The theme for Earth Day 2023 was “Invest in Our Planet.” It focuses on engaging governments, institutions, businesses, and citizens to do their part: everyone accounted for, everyone accountable.
